Position Summary
Are you a highly motivated Master’s or PhD student with a passion for acoustics, control systems, and aviation innovation? Join us for a thesis internship focused on developing cutting-edge Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) strategies designed specifically for VIP aircraft. The aim of this thesis is to design, simulate, and evaluate broadband ANC concepts tailored to reduce cabin noise and enhance passenger comfort in business aviation. Working in a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, you will apply signal processing and control theory to address real-world acoustic challenges in aircraft interiors. This internship offers the unique opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project in collaboration with your university.
Your Role
Literature & Research Review:
- Overview of noise sources and transmission paths in commercial aircraft cabins.
- Review of current ANC technologies: feedforward, feedback, and hybrid systems.
- State-of-the-art in broadband ANC applications in confined spaces.
- Identify constraints and opportunities for ANC implementation in aircraft environments.
Methodology:
- Characterize the acoustic environment around the passenger using measurements or validated models.
- Identify target noise frequency ranges for attenuation.
- Develop signal processing algorithms for broadband noise cancellation.
- Select and justify suitable control hardware and software for real-time implementation
Simulation & Testing:
- Simulate seat-level ANC performance in a physical testbench (mock-up).
- Conduct experimental evaluations under varied acoustic conditions (white noise, engine noise).
- Investigate performance under varying conditions (seat occupancy, head position, aircraft operations).
Analysis & Results:
- Assess system stability, latency, and robustness.
- Evaluate improvements in perceived passenger comfort.
- Discuss integration feasibility within certification and aircraft design constraints.
Softwares & Tools:
- MATLAB / Simulink – control algorithm development and simulation.
- LabVIEW– prototyping and real-time testing.
- Python – data analysis and visualization.
- Measurement equipment – microphones, speakers, DAQ systems.
Your Profile
- Enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- Strong background in signal processing and control systems
- Practical experience with simulation tools and measurement systems
- Independent, analytical thinker with a hands-on mindset
- Fluent in English; German is a plus
